Comfort and support

The first feature anyone is going to want to know about when it comes to buying a new mattress is how comfortable and how supportive it is. We know the importance of both and think it is a great starting point when comparing two similar mattresses. Getting the balance right can be difficult but we explain all so you can find the one for your sleep.

Panda

Starting with the Panda Hybrid Bamboo mattress, the pocket springs are sandwiched between memory foam layers so you cannot feel them when lying on it. This provides you with a good level of support, enhanced by the firm base, but it is also extremely comfortable. We would not recommend the Panda Hybrid mattress for those who are stomach sleepers because the mattress moulds to any pressure points, it instantly sinks wherever your body weight is put. This could mean you will be supported in the wrong places when sleeping.

OTTY

Onto the OTTY Pure+ Hybrid Bamboo & Charcoal mattress. This one is slightly softer and squishy which made it very comfortable to lie on. There is enough support on the pressure points, with a medium-firm feel and highly pressure relieving. Sleeping on this mattress is ideal for all sleeping positions, more so for back sleepers. Although, if you are a light sleeper then you may find that the mattress feels too firm for you.

Compare

When testing, we found that the Panda Hybrid was denser than the OTTY Hybrid mattress but they are both of medium density on the firmness scale. The two mattresses were comfortable and you can still get support from them. They both had limited edge support but out of the two, OTTY Pure mattress had slightly more edge support. You will need to decide if you prefer one with a slight bounce to it (Panda) or a more cushioned surface (OTTY). A medium-firm mattress is suitable for any sleeping position and also pain relief to relieve any pressure from your joints.

Details and structure

Next up we have the minor details that you may not think about checking before you buy, as well as the internal structure of the products. From the overall aesthetic to the practicality of them both.

Panda

Visually, the Panda Hybrid Bamboo mattress is simple, sleek and chic – the design is kept to a minimum with the two contrasting colours. There are handles underneath the mattress making it easy to manoeuvre when needed, with two handles on either side. For aesthetic purposes this works well, however, for practicality, it would have been beneficial if they were on the edge of the mattress.
Internally, the mattress is made up of six layers that all work together to give you support whilst sleeping.

From the supportive base, the multi-zonal springs, the orthopaedic and high-density foam layers, and up to the bamboo cover. Having orthopaedic grade memory foam can help with pain relief, thanks to its pressure-relieving abilities. The pocket spring layer is sandwiched between the high-density support foam layers and comfort layers, reducing the motion transfer to make it suitable for those sharing a mattress.

OTTY

The design of the OTTY Pure+ Hybrid Bamboo & Charcoal mattress has a different approach to the Panda mattress. In our opinion, the corner panels are unnecessary for the mattress's aesthetic, but some may like the asymmetrical look it creates. On top of the OTTY mattress, there is an arrangement of embroidered sections. This is a great idea for segregating each zone for a body part so that when you are in different sleeping positions, the mattress will adapt to your body shape to encourage spinal alignment – especially for side and back sleepers.

However, when testing this product, we found that initially the design was uncomfortable in places to rest on but we do think you will get used to this in time. The internal structure of the OTTY hybrid mattress consists of seven layers, including memory foam and mini pocket springs. The combination of a side support layer and the pocket springs isolates any movement to provide a great night's sleep with no motion transfer disturbance.

Compare

The two products have a washable cover to protect the mattresses. We can confirm the Panda bamboo cover can easily be removed, washed and zipped back up, with the base being able to be cleaned with a damp cloth. On the other hand, the OTTY removable cover can be easily taken off for washing but it does need to be dry-cleaned rather than machine-washed. As for the base, both products have an anti-slip base. This is great for using the mattress on any type of bed frame. On closer inspection, we found the OTTY mattress had a textured grip to the base which is more beneficial for anti-slip.

Materials and breathability

You will need to look carefully at the materials as these can affect the breathability of a mattress. A breathable mattress is a good mattress for hot sleepers, while a hypoallergenic and anti-bacterial mattress is great for anyone with sensitive skin or allergies.

Panda

Panda is known for being eco-friendly and this is reiterated through the materials used. The cover is made from bamboo yarn; this wool layer makes the product luxuriously soft. Under the removable cover, there is a memory foam layer that is bamboo infused.

Having a bamboo memory foam layer and a bamboo cover helps with temperature regulation, making the mattress highly breathable. Bamboo is a successful way to keep the mattress naturally hypoallergenic and antibacterial. The support layer is made from polyester that has been created by recycled ocean bottles.

OTTY

Comparing the materials of the Panda Hybrid Bamboo mattress to the ones of the OTTY Pure+ Hybrid Bamboo & Charcoal Premium mattress is fairly easy because they include very similar contents. One of the differentiating factors is that some of the memory foam is bamboo and charcoal-infused memory foam.

As previously mentioned, bamboo regulates body heat and is breathable. Adding the charcoal-infused layers provides odour elimination and is hypoallergenic for those with allergies. Under the bamboo memory foam, you will find the pocket springs.

Compare

Both options can be a great mattress choice if you are a hot sleeper or have any allergies, due to the properties of bamboo. The OTTY Hybrid mattress offers slightly more benefits with charcoal-infused layers. If you are wanting to optimise the breathability of your new mattress, we recommended having a bed frame with a slatted base to increase ventilation.

Ethics and warranty

Before making a decision, it would be wise to check the ethic information as well as the info about the warranty. Maybe you are a vegan – and therefore you would want to sleep on a mattress that does not contain any material that comes from the animals.

Panda

Panda has a circle of life programme where they will take your previous mattress away free of charge to recycle it. The bamboo memory foam is 100% recyclable and the packaging of the hybrid mattresses can also be recycled. Any bamboo used in their products is sourced from approved forests, and grown pesticide and chemical free. Panda aims to reduce waste by reusing and recycling as much as possible.

OTTY

OTTY state that the few mattresses that get returned in their trial period are cleaned to be given to charity or community projects so no mattresses get wasted. They will also take your older mattress away but it does come with a fee of £30. From what we could find out, there is not a lot of information on the sustainability of OTTY mattresses.

Compare

Both mattress brands offer a 100-night trial period for you to test out the mattress and see if it is what you have been looking for. Panda and OTTY also offer a 10-year warranty, giving you the confidence that your mattress will last a long time before needing to replace it.

The online chat was helpful when answering any questions we had, but we found they were not as polite as the Panda team.

How did we compare the Panda Hybrid Bamboo Mattress and the OTTY Pure Plus Hybrid Bamboo & Charcoal Mattress?

For the sake of transparency, we'd now like to go over exactly how our tests are done. On a general level, all of the products we review go through the following procedures:

To further explain, here's how we go about testing and comparing the products:

We took the time to directly compare the two mattresses so we could truly see the difference in the products. Keeping them side by side meant we could look at the visual aspects of them, as well as have a feel for the structure, density and pressure alleviation. The testing went on to spending time resting on each mattress and changing positions to see how the mattress functions. This included finding what points felt relieved and which ones were uncomfortable, and the feel of the materials used. Doing this, allowed us to work out what types of sleepers would benefit from each mattress, and who would not prefer them.

Overview

From testing each product, we found that the Panda Hybrid Bamboo Mattress is most suited for a lighter sleeper due to its softer support. If you are a heavier sleeper then you may feel as if you sinking too much into the mattress and not receiving the support you are looking for. As for sleeping position, side sleepers will find this most beneficial because it will help to align your spine through the night. Those who sleep on their backs may find this mattress comfortable as well, but for stomach sleepers, it is not so practical.

Repeating the same tests on the OTTY Pure Plus Hybrid Bamboo & Charcoal Mattress, we concluded that this mattress is suited more towards heavy sleepers. The top layer is cushioned to provide comfort, but you can feel the support from beneath so you won't feel as though you are sinking in. This support goes from edge to edge, including good edge support layers, although it is still limited.

Each mattress is approved for allergies and has temperature regulation because they are hybrid bamboo mattresses, creating ventilation and good air circulation through the structure. For those who are in a couple and see motion transfer as a key feature, you will find that both mattress choices will assist with reducing how much movement you will feel from your partner.

FAQs

Are the Panda Hybrid Bamboo Mattress and the OTTY Pure+ Hybrid Bamboo & Charcoal Mattress both good for side sleepers?

If there was one sleep position that would benefit from both of the mattresses, it would be a side sleeper. This is because they will both mould to support your body. However, this isn’t to say that other sleeping positions won’t also find both mattresses comfortable. The OTTY hybrid mattress and Panda hybrid mattress are both good for those who sleep on their backs, too.

What are the negatives of both the Panda Hybrid Bamboo Mattress and the OTTY Pure+ Hybrid Bamboo & Charcoal Mattress?

Both hybrid mattresses are more expensive and heavier to move in comparison to other mattress types. Another point that some people might see as a disadvantage, is a hybrid mattress soften when they are warm and become firmer when they are cold. Depending on the room temperature and if you are a hot sleeper or not, this factor could have an effect on your mattress choice. Keep in mind that both hybrid mattresses do have good temperature regulation.

Are the Panda Hybrid Bamboo Mattress and the OTTY Pure+ Hybrid Bamboo & Charcoal Mattress both good for your back?

A bamboo memory foam mattress tends to be a medium-firm mattress, this means they have a good level of firmness to aid back pain or reduce the chance of having back pain. Comfort and support are vital and both hybrid mattresses will help achieve these key features. The combination of memory foam and pocket springs gives you spinal alignment and should not cause any discomfort while you are asleep.
